Why Equality of Opportunity and Human Rights?
|
|
The Northern Ireland Act 1998 placed new duties on public authorities to promote equality of opportunity and good relations. The Equality Scheme approved by the Equality Commission in March 2001 sets out how we will effectively ‘mainstream’ equality issues.
The Human Rights Act 1998 made the European Convention on Human Rights part of the law of Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK as of 2 October 2000, and public authorities must act compatibly with the Convention rights.
The Equality and Human Rights Officer is responsible for supporting managers in dealing with the issues that may arise from Equality and Human Rights Legislation.
If you require further information about the Section 75 duties or the Convention Rights please contact the Equality and Human Rights Officer.
