ICT Management Services

ICT Management Services
ICT Management Services are involved with all Services within the NEELB delivering both support and development. Behind the scenes, a broad range of technological activity is supported by a small dedicated team of ICT specialists, who ensure that facilities are maintained and operate efficiently.

Most people rarely need to contact ICT Management Services, and so could be forgiven for wondering what goes on behind the doors of our computer rooms.  The answer is “quite a lot”! Every day, hundreds of people “log on” to our network including many business units outside our main headquarters at County Hall.

Thousands of pages are sent to networked printers each day, and annually up to 1 million email messages are sent and received. Staff log on to an array of remote services, and run a vast range of applications including.  Remote users access our Extranet, and read their mail from anywhere in the world, while schools and other centres with no direct connection to Headquarters have web based access to Board facilities.

eMail is checked for virus and spam content discarding tens of thousands of unnecessary messages, web sites browsed are filtered for appropriate content, and sophisticated firewalls protect our networks from attack, while ensuring valid traffic flow to and from the internet is unhindered.  Hundreds of Gigabytes of data are backed up routinely, and software is updated on every connected PC – often without the user ever being aware of it.

Members of the public, teachers, and many others access countless pages of information from our advanced web servers, which not only host the NEELB web site, but a number of other leading educational sites including Education Support for Northern Ireland and Youthwork NI (Curriculum Development Unit - CDU). These sites are all accessibility friendly and contain a host of online features.

Our services go far beyond simply ensuring that systems are installed and are operating efficiently.  Our Helpdesk is the first port of call when users experience difficulties.  Unlike some organisations where the person at the end of the telephone simply logs a call, our Helpdesk operators are often the staff who actually provide the solution to the end user.  Application support includes standard office packages, pupil services systems, human resources and payroll systems.

Ongoing development work ensures the NEELB ICT services keep abreast of technological developments, and support is provided to staff throughout the board, in everything from producing a complex report, to setting up videoconferencing links with schools in America!

We are involved in strategic development of ICT services, both within our own Board, and on a wider scale with our colleagues in the other Education and Library Boards throughout Northern Ireland.
