Functions
A) Functions to be performed on behalf of and in the name of the Board.
- the appointment of persons to represent the Board and where appropriate other interests on Boards of Governors of Controlled and Controlled Integrated schools, Maintained Schools, Institutes of Further and Higher Education, certain Voluntary Grammar Schools and Advisory panels for Youth Centres.
B) Functions where the committee is required to investigate and report and/or recommend to the Board.
- To consider and make recommendations on general policy and strategy with regard to educational provision in schools and the welfare of children attending them.
- To consider and make recommendations on reorganisation and development schemes for schools; the provision of new schools, extensions, amalgamations, closures etc.
- To consider and make recommendations on matters relating to the Advisory and Support Services, curriculum development and training for teachers.
- To consider and make recommendations on developments in teaching and learning such as the development of ICT.
- To establish when necessary the Expulsions Sub-Committee.
- To consider and make recommendations on all aspects of capital provision in schools not delegated to Boards of Governors.
- To consider policy issues in relation to the appointment of governors and the establishment of Boards of Governors.
- To consider and make recommendations on Schemes of Management for Controlled and Controlled Integrated Schools.
- To oversee the planning and implementation of training for Boards of Governors.
- To consider and make recommendations of all other matters relating to the governance of schools.
- To consider and recommend Financial assistance for educational purposes.
- To consider and make recommendations on all aspects of educational policy relating to Local Management of Schools.
- To consider, establish panels and make recommendations on aspects of school admissions and curriculum appeals.
- To receive reports and approve responses on School Inspections.
- To establish Teachers' Consultative Sub-Committees and receive their minutes.
- To consider matters referred by the Board for special consideration and report.

To consider requests for explusion of pupils for controlled schools.
- Composition
The committee consists of 3 members, chosen from a pool of 8 members of the Education Committee (Schools); one of the members will act as chairperson and will be present at all meetings.
