Governors Training - Online Application 2007/2008
The following programme of training is being provided for Governors. The form should be completed at least two weeks before training is due to take place. The Support Programme details can also be downloaded at the bottom of this page.
Induction
Target Audience - New Governors and those returning after a break in Governor Service
This session will provide initial training for new Governors and give an overview of the roles and responsibilities of Governors in relation to schools and school governance.
Financial Planning
Target Audience – Members of Finance Committees
These sessions will focus on the Governors financial management responsibilities in the running of the school.
The Role of the Chair of Governors
Target Audience - Chairs and Vice-Chairs of Governors
This session will outline the specific role of the Chairperson in relation to the work of the Governors and the strategic management of the school. It will focus on organisation and chairing of meetings, relationships with Principal and Staff, information transfer and performance management.
The Entitlement Framework / Learning Communities in the NEELB
Target Audience – Governors of Post Primary Schools
This session will explore how schools may fulfil the requirement to extend the number and type of courses offered to pupils aged 14-19 by 2009 and will outline how schools in the NEELB are collaborating in Learning Communities to extend provision for pupils.
Pastoral Issues
Target Audience – All Governors
This session will look at the statutory aspects of Personal Development/Learning for Life and Work and the role of this subject in the Revised Curriculum.
Attendance Management
Target Audience – All Governors
This session will outline the roles and responsibilities in schools in relation to managing attendance of Staff (teaching and non-teaching). It will focus on Board policies, procedures and good practice in this area and will also outline the roles within the Board in working in partnership with schools.
Redundancy
Target Audience – All Governors
This session will outline for Governors the procedures involved in dealing with teacher redundancy.
Performance Review and Staff Development
Target Audience – Governor Reviewers
This session will introduce Governors to the Performance Review and Staff Development Scheme. It will provide a brief overview of the role of the Governor Reviewers and also information on review discussion, review statement phases and performance target setting.
Recruitment and Selection of Staff
Target Audience – All Governors
These sessions will look at the entire process of appointing new staff. They will outline good practice, legal/procedural requirements and highlight the importance of child protection issues when recruiting staff. Please note all sessions will have a maximum of 40 participants.
Special Educational Needs
Target Audience – All Governors
This session will outline the legislative framework in relation to meeting the requirements for pupils with Special Educational Needs, with particular reference to The Code of Practice and the Special Educational Needs Disability Order (SENDO).
Health and Safety
Target Audience – All Governors
This session will outline Governors’ responsibilities for health and safety and the application of risk assessment in the school setting. It will also explain the provision of security hardware to schools and the requirement of school emergency planning.
Including pupils new to the English Language
Target Audience – All Governors
This course aims to inform Governors of issues that relate to the inclusion of newcomer pupils, for whom English is not their first language, in primary and post primary school settings.
Child Protection
Target Audience – Chairs of Governors and specific governors who have been delegated to take the lead in child protection issues in order that they can assist the full BOG with their child protection governance.
This session will provide in-depth child protection training from the Child Protection Support Service for Schools (CPSSS).
