Educational Psychology Service, Other Questions

What is the difference between a comprehensive assessment and a statutory assessment?
An educational psychologist undertakes a comprehensive assessment. A statutory assessment is reserved for pupils with the most significant special educational needs and where progress has continued to be unsatisfactory despite reasonable effort to help. A statutory assessment is managed by the NEELB’s Special Education Section and involves all the professionals working to support your child’s education. You can find out more about statutory assessment by contacting personnel from the NEELB’s Special Education Branch. (Telephone: 028 2566 2562)

What governs the way children with special educational needs are assessed in the NEELB?
The NEELB has a Special Educational Needs Policy. Information on recommended practices can also be found in the Code of Practice on the Identification and Assessment of Special Educational Needs published in 1998 by the Department of Education (Northern Ireland).
