Schools Branch, Procedures for the Suspension and Expulsion of Pupils in Controlled Schools

In 1998, the NEELB provided all controlled schools with a scheme specifying the procedures to be followed in relation to the suspension or expulsion of pupils.

A similar scheme exists for maintained schools and is available from CCMS.

It is important that schools follow the procedures, which provide a legislative and administrative framework. Officers in Schools Branch are available to provide advice and guidance to schools on the procedures.

In addition, Schools Branch Officers will:

  • monitor the instances of suspension and expulsion

  • liaise with a range of agencies when appropriate, including the Board’s Behaviour Support Service, Educational Welfare Service and Educational Psychology Service;

  • provide information in the form of regular reports to the North Eastern Education and Library Board.

In accordance with the Board’s procedures with regard to the expulsion of a pupil, a Board officer will attend all consultation meetings to discuss the educational options available to the pupil.

The Assistant Advisory Officer, Post Primary, will assist and support controlled schools with the decision of the Expulsions Sub-Committee and also assist parents of pupils expelled from other school sectors.
A copy of the Board’s procedures is available by contacting the Schools Branch Office.
