Curriculum, Environment and Society - E.S.D
“Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Northern Ireland has evolved out of Environment Education and Development Education ideas and has links to personal, social, economic and citizenship issues. ESD is seen as a process of learning how to make decisions that consider the long term future of the ecology, economy and equity of all communities. Sustainability is about improving the quality of people’s lives and surroundings without destroying the life supporting systems on which current and future generations depend.”
(ESD 2005 p6)
From September 2007 Education for Sustainable Development will be one of the Key Elements of the Revised Curriculum.
In preparation for this the Inter Board ESD group has produced a Good Practice Guide for Primary, Secondary and Special Schools. All schools have received a copy of this document and it can also be downloaded by clicking on the link below.
The guide gives clear advice on how to audit ESD in your school and shows progression in ESD from Foundation Stage to Key Stage 4
Growing evidence of climate change and “global warming” has given impetus to the need for Education for Sustainable Development.
The Woodland Trust’s Nature Detectives website gives pupils a real opportunity to be involved in monitoring and reporting the changes in nature that indicate climate change. The site also has lots of information on plants, trees, birds and insects. At the moment a number of species are being monitored for the signs of autumn. The site also has lots of downloadable resources including sheets to help pupils identify species.

The Woodland Trust also provides free tree and hedging packs to schools. To register your school go to http://www.naturedetectives.org.uk/help/treepacks.htm
