N.I. Numeracy Strategy, Numeracy Cohorts

Support for Numeracy
During 2002 - 2003, in supporting the NI Numeracy Strategy, the NEELB's maths team delivered 78 full days of centre-based training for teachers of mathematics.
These were attended by:
  • 915 primary teachers from 105 primary schools
  • 110 post-primary maths teachers from 22 post-primary schools
  • 36 teachers from 3 special schools
  • 230 primary numeracy co-ordinators
  • 53 post-primary co-ordinators
  • 40 Heads of Mathematics attended a two-day conference
In total approximately 2420 teacher-days of centre-based professional development in mathematics/numeracy was provided during 2002 - 2003
 
School-based whole-staff professional development days were delivered by the maths team in:
  • 132 primary schools catering for 1036 primary teachers
  • 24 post-primary schools catering for 650 teachers
In addition the maths teams delivered 35 parents' evenings for numeracy.

Additional actions taken to develop numeracy within NEELB:
  • almost 800 year 8 pupils took part in school-based Maths Fun Days supported by members of the NEELB maths team
  • 650 pupils from 34 teams in NEELB post-primary schools took part in the international mathematics competition Mathématiques Sans Frontières. (The NEELB continued to organise the competition throughout Northern Ireland, where 1600 students from 81 teams took part).
  • 144 primary seven pupils from 72 NEELB primary schools took part in the 24 Game competition held in the Antrim Board Centre.
  • 96 year 8 pupils from 24 NEELB schools took part in the post-primary 24 Game competition.
  • The maths team organised and delivered a Numeracy Summer Scheme which was attended by 21 pupils for the whole of the first week of July 2003.
  • During August 2003 the maths team delivered five Numeracy Days of Excellence which were attended by 140 pupils.
