Support for Schools
The introduction of Personal Development as a new learning area to the primary curriculum is an opportunity to consolidate and develop what has already been a strong focus within many primary schools. Personal Development draws together into one framework strands and approaches such as Health Education as a Cross Curricular Theme, the school’s formal and informal Pastoral Care programme, Education for Mutual Understanding and promoting positive behaviour, to name a few.
Principals and senior leaders
A series of one day seminars for Principals entitled Leading Learning are planned from November 2005 onwards. There will also be training for senior leaders in the three key areas of Personal Development, Assessment for Learning and Skills and Capabilities throughout the year.

Year 5 teachers
From September 2006 Personal Development will be a statutory learning area in Yr 5 and training and resources will be provided for all Yr 5 teachers in this school year.

School ‘readiness’
It may be useful, however, for schools to consider now their ‘readiness’ for Personal Development throughout the school. A number of the Quality Indicators from the Together Towards Improvement document provide a useful starting point for this process. We have identified those indicators and characteristics of good practice that relate to Personal Development to enable your school to begin to the process of building a strong foundation for Personal Development. You can use this document independently or with CASS support.
