Health Promoting Schools is a partnership between Schools, Education and Library Boards, Investing For Health, and The Health Promotion Agency for Northern Ireland .
It aims to enable schools ‘ to provide an environment where the physical and mental well-being, health and safety of staff and pupils are supported, in partnership with family, community and external agencies.’
It also aims to support schools in developing good practice in the development of policies, practices, and structures that will facilitate a sustainable health promotion programme.
It features work in 3 key areas
- The ethos and environment of the school
- Quality of teaching and learning
- Quality of management
Health Promoting Schools begins with self evaluation, which the whole school is involved in, identifying strengths and building on them, as well as identifying areas for further development.
This is done by auditing current practice against 8 Health Promoting Schools Criteria.
- School environment
- Self-esteem
- Relationships within the school community
- Policies and practices
- The Personal Development curriculum
- Extra-curricular activities
- Parental involvement
- Links with Outside Agencies
Once the audit is complete a core team is set up to draw up action plans to address the issues which the school has prioritised.
