Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How often is update training and what happens if instructors don’t attend?
A. It is advised that update training should take place annually. If it is not possible to attend on the date you have been invited please arrange an alternative date as soon as possible by contacting Joanne Caldwell (Antrim Board Centre).  If instructors fail to attend an update session promptly, they will not be insured to deliver Heartstart training within their schools or communities.

Q. How often do schools reaffiliate?
A. Schools are notified annually in May to reaffiliate to the Heartstart scheme for the next school year.  Heartstart head office (Edinburgh) will send a Reaffiliation Form to the Co-ordinator in school to complete and return promptly for collation of numbers trained and confirmation of training supervisor.

Q. What happens if a school fails to reaffiliate?
A. If a school fails to reaffiliate, BHF will arrange collection of the manikins and training resources, to be redeployed elsewhere.

Q. What is the role of the Programme Co-ordinator, and who can take on this role?
A. Only a member of school staff who has trained as a Heartstart Instructor can take on the role of co-ordinating the programme within the school.

The role involves:

  • Promoting the Heartstart programme in school each year so that pupils receive training

  • Keep records of all training (Attendance Sheets) and forward pupil evaluations to Antrim Board Centre as soon as pupils are trained

  • Complete and return the annual Reaffiliation Form and send to Edinburgh office

Q. What happens if the Co-ordinator transfers, moves, leaves their post or are off on long-term sick/maternity leave?
A.
If the Co-ordinator of the school is unable to fulfil their role for any of the above reasons another Heartstart Instructor within the school must keep the training records, and complete the Reaffiliation form in June.  It is also important to inform both Joanne Caldwell (joanne.caldwell@neelb.org.uk) in ABC and the Edinburgh office (wightmanf@bhf.org.uk) of the change in name.

Q. How often do the lungs in the manikins need changed?
A. Please refer to the Infection Control Policy.

Q. Where are new lungs, faces and wipes obtained?
A. To obtain an order form for new lungs, faces and wipes, contact the Edinburgh office (wightmanf@bhf.org.uk)
