Music, Northern Ireland Curriculum

'The fundamental aim of the music curriculum is to develop pupils' musical ability'.
'All pupils should have experiences in both making and responding to music.'
Northern Ireland Music Curriculum

In the world outside school, music plays a very significant part in the lives of young people. It provides enjoyment and a common means of communication. It can create an identity and a frame of reference. As a means of expression it can reach the parts of human beings that words are unable to. Participation in musical activities helps to build up confidence and self-esteem which has a positive influence on other subject areas.

All children have the right to experience Music as defined in the Programme of Study in the Northern Ireland Music Curriculum.

The North Eastern Education and Library Board Music Service has three permanent Curriculum Advisory and Support teachers. They are available for support and advice in all aspects of music in the classroom in both Primary and Post Primary schools
